Poultry farming is of importance to farmes and the general populace. It is a fast-growing and thriving agricultural business that has provided job opportunities and has boosted the economy. Poultry production thrives in Nigeria due to the affordability, availability, and fast-growing rate of poultry birds. However, the increased demand and production of poultry for meat and eggs comes with the challenge on proper waste disposal, management, and control. To curb this challenge, poultry waste is used as manure by farmers as an organic fertilizer to enrich the soil and for increase in agricultural productivity.
Poultry manure is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, making it a more suitable nutrient source for plant growth. Chicken manure contains 0.9% nitrogen, 1.7% potassium, 0.5% phosphorus, and other trace elements, thus making it suitable for plant growth. Poultry manure is considered the best because it is lightweight and contains low moisture content. Other uses and importance of poultry manure are discussed below:
- Improved Crop Production
Including poultry manure as an organic fertilizer increases crop production in rice, vegetables, wheat, and corn farms. This is due to the high nitrogen content that favors crop growth.
- Enhances soil fertility
Poultry manure contains high amounts of macronutrients that boost soil fertility. Nitrogen in manure aids in releasing nutrients into the soil, promoting rapid crop growth. Phosphorus encourages root development and flowering, and potassium strengthens plant cell walls, increasing plants’ disease resistance.
- Good Soil Amendment and Moisture Conservation
Prolonged use of chemical fertilizers such as urea damages the soil structure, thus reducing crop production. However, incorporating poultry manure into affected farmlands can restore soil fertility by adding nutrients and allowing beneficial microorganisms to be grown. This makes poultry manure a good choice for soil amendment, as relying on chemical fertilizers alone isn’t enough. Poultry compost is used as mulch for crops to conserve moisture and protect roots during dry periods. It can also restore land damaged by mining or industrial activities.
- As a feed additive
Poultry manure can be used as a feed additive when mixed with grains for cattle and fish. However, ensure it is free of harmful and indigestible materials like nylon, plastic, and glass. The manure should be appropriately processed to remove harmful microorganisms like Salmonella. This can be done through heat processing, chemical methods, or fermentation.
- Sustainable Farming Practice
Utilizing poultry manure as an organic fertilizer promotes sustainable farming practices. The waste is recycled for farm use and reduces the use of chemical fertilizers. This practice minimizes water pollution, releases nutrients slowly, and reduces the risk of nutrient leaching into groundwater and water bodies.
- Cost-Effectiveness
Poultry manure is cheaper when compared to synthetic fertilizers. It is often available at lower costs, especially for farmers who raise poultry. Utilizing poultry manure reduces the need for expensive chemical fertilizers, lowers production costs, and increases profit for farmers.
